How same-day delivery works

Same-day couriers operate differently from standard parcel services. Instead of going through a sorting hub, a dedicated driver collects your item and drives it directly to the destination. This means higher costs but guaranteed speed — most same-day deliveries arrive within 2–6 hours.

The price depends on three factors: distance, parcel size, and urgency. A local delivery (under 30 miles) might cost £29–50. A cross-country delivery (London to Manchester) typically runs £80–150.

When to use same-day delivery

  • Legal documents with court deadlines that cannot be missed.
  • Medical supplies and prescriptions that are time-critical.
  • Replacement parts when a machine is down and costing you money every hour.
  • Forgotten items — passports, keys, laptops left behind.
  • Business samples needed for a meeting happening today.

Same-day vs next-day: when to save money

Same-day delivery costs 5–10x more than next-day. A parcel that costs £4.89 next-day with DPD will cost £30–80 same-day. Before choosing same-day, ask yourself: does the cost of waiting one more day actually exceed the £25–75 premium?

For most personal parcels, the answer is no. For business-critical items, the answer is often yes — a factory losing £500/hour in downtime will happily pay £100 for a same-day replacement part.

How to book a same-day courier

  1. Book as early as possible. Most same-day services require booking before 10am for delivery by end of day. After 2pm, options become limited and expensive.
  2. Have the parcel ready. The driver will arrive within 30–90 minutes of booking. Have it packaged, labelled and waiting.
  3. Confirm the destination. Ensure someone will be at the delivery address. Same-day couriers do not leave parcels unattended.
  4. Compare quotes. Prices vary significantly between providers. Always get at least 2–3 quotes before booking.
