Understanding Cut-off Times
The cut-off time is the latest you can book and hand over your parcel to guarantee next day delivery. This is one of the most important factors:
- Evri: Parcel must be at a ParcelShop by 12:00 noon. This is the earliest cut-off, which is the trade-off for the cheapest price.
- Royal Mail: Depends on your local Post Office closing time. Most close at 17:30, but the latest collection from the Post Office may be earlier.
- Yodel: Collection booked by 15:00 for same-day pickup.
- DPD: Book by 16:00 for same-day collection. DPD has the best cut-off-to-price ratio.
- UPS & FedEx: Latest cut-offs at 17:00, but you pay premium prices for the privilege.
Which Is Most Reliable?
Price is not everything. If your parcel absolutely must arrive tomorrow, reliability matters more than saving a few pounds.
| Courier | On-time Rate (approx) | Tracking Quality | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| DPD | 97% | Excellent — 1hr delivery window, live map | Important parcels, business use |
| Royal Mail | 93% | Good — scan-based updates | Letters and small parcels |
| UPS | 95% | Very good — detailed scans | Heavy or high-value items |
| FedEx | 95% | Very good | Time-critical, guaranteed by 12:00 |
| Evri | 88% | Basic — limited updates | Budget next day when timing is flexible |
| Yodel | 89% | Good — photo proof of delivery | Mid-range option with collection |
Our Recommendations
Best overall value
DPD Next Day at £8.49. The 1-hour delivery window and 97% reliability make it worth the extra £3 over Evri. You and your recipient get live tracking and a predicted delivery window.
Cheapest option
Evri Next Day at £5.49. Fine for non-urgent items where “next day” is preferred but not critical. The early cut-off time is the main drawback.
Most reliable guaranteed
FedEx UK Priority Overnight at £12.49 with guaranteed delivery by 12:00 noon. If it does not arrive on time, you can claim a refund.
Best for last-minute bookings
UPS Express Saver. With a 17:00 cut-off and same-day collection, you can book well into the afternoon and still get next day delivery.
Things to Watch Out For
- Saturday delivery: Most next day services operate Monday to Friday only. Saturday delivery costs extra (£2–£5 surcharge) and must be specifically selected.
- Remote areas: Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, and Channel Islands may take an extra day even on “next day” services.
- Bank holidays: Next day means next working day. A parcel posted on Friday will arrive Monday (or Tuesday if Monday is a bank holiday).
- Volumetric weight: Large but light parcels may be charged at volumetric weight, pushing the price up significantly.
