Why Packaging Matters
Every year UK couriers handle over 4 billion parcels. Automated sorting belts, stacking in vans and door-step drops all put stress on your box. If it’s poorly packed you risk:
The H-Tape Method
- Damage that voids your insurance claim
- Returns costing you double the postage
- Bad reviews from customers receiving crushed goods
Choosing the Right Box Size
Use a box that leaves roughly 5–8 cm of clearance around the item on every side. Too big and the item rattles around; too small and the walls buckle under pressure. Couriers also charge by volumetric weight — an oversized box costs more to ship even if the item is light.
Tip: If you ship regularly, keep three standard box sizes (small, medium, large) so you always have the right fit.
Padding Materials Compared
| Material | Best For | Watch Out |
|---|---|---|
| Bubble wrap | Fragile items, electronics | Not eco-friendly unless recycled |
| Packing peanuts | Filling voids in large boxes | Messy; items can shift |
| Scrunched newspaper | Budget option, light items | Ink can transfer; less shock absorption |
| Air pillows | Lightweight void fill | Pop easily under heavy loads |
Packing Fragile Items
For anything breakable — ceramics, glass, electronics — use the double-box method. Wrap the item in bubble wrap, place it in a smaller box, then sit that box inside a larger one with padding on every side. Protect corners with foam inserts or folded cardboard.
Always perform the “shake test”: seal the box and give it a gentle shake. If you feel movement, add more fill.
The H-Tape Method
Run a strip of strong packing tape along every seam — the centre and both edges — forming an “H” shape on the top and bottom of the box. This distributes stress and stops flaps popping open on the belt.
Use proper brown packing tape or reinforced gummed tape — never masking tape, duct tape or sellotape.
Labelling Your Parcel
- Place the label on the largest flat surface — never on a seam or over tape joins.
- Remove or cover any old shipping labels and barcodes.
- Put a second copy of the address inside the box in case the outer label is lost.
- If using a printed label, cover it with clear tape to protect from rain.
Waterproofing for UK Weather
British weather is unpredictable. Wrap the contents in a poly bag before boxing, especially for door-step deliveries. If using a poly mailer as the outer packaging, make sure all seams are sealed. Cardboard alone will not protect against a downpour.
What You Cannot Send
Most UK couriers prohibit:
- Flammable liquids, aerosols and compressed gases
- Lithium batteries shipped alone (built into devices is usually fine)
- Firearms, ammunition, bladed weapons
- Perishable food without approved cold-chain packaging
- Cash, precious metals, loose gemstones
- Drugs and controlled substances
Always check your chosen courier’s prohibited-items list before booking.
