If you need to send something too heavy or too large for a standard parcel courier, pallet delivery is the answer. It is commonly used by businesses but is increasingly accessible to individuals thanks to online pallet networks. Here is everything you need to know.
When to Use Pallet Delivery
Consider pallet delivery when your shipment weighs over 30kg, is too large for a standard parcel (over 150cm in any dimension), or when you have multiple boxes going to the same address. Common items sent on pallets include furniture, building materials, bulk orders, machinery, and large appliances.
Pallet Sizes
| Size | Dimensions | Max Height | Max Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarter pallet | 60 x 80 cm | 60 cm | 250 kg |
| Half pallet | 80 x 120 cm | 100 cm | 500 kg |
| Full pallet | 120 x 120 cm | 150 cm | 1,000 kg |
| Oversized | 120 x 120 cm | 220 cm | 1,000 kg |
Costs
UK mainland pallet delivery typically costs £30-80 for a quarter pallet and £50-120 for a full pallet, depending on distance and speed. Next-day delivery costs more than economy (2-3 day) services. Prices to Scotland, Highlands, and islands are higher.
How to Book
Use a pallet network comparison site like PalletOnline, Pallet2Ship, or National Pallets. Enter your pallet size, weight, and collection and delivery postcodes. Choose your service level and book online. The courier will collect from your address on a tail-lift vehicle.
Make sure your goods are securely strapped or shrink-wrapped to the pallet. The goods should not overhang the edges of the pallet. Stack heaviest items at the bottom and ensure the weight is evenly distributed.
Key Tips
- Wrap goods in shrink wrap or strap them securely to the pallet
- Nothing should overhang the pallet edges
- The collection vehicle will have a tail lift but the driver will not carry goods into your building
- Book tail-lift delivery at the receiving end if needed
- Pallets can be left outside if nobody is available, so specify delivery instructions carefully
