Letter vs Large Letter

A standard letter must be no larger than 24cm x 16.5cm x 0.5cm and weigh no more than 100g. A large letter can be up to 35.3cm x 25cm x 2.5cm and weigh up to 750g. Anything larger or heavier is classed as a parcel.

Common items that fit as a large letter include paperback books, DVDs, thin clothing items, and A4 documents in a board-backed envelope. Sending as a large letter rather than a parcel can save significant money.

Where to Buy Stamps

  • Post Office — Buy any quantity, get advice on sizes and services
  • Royal Mail online — Buy books of stamps delivered to your door
  • Supermarkets — Most Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Co-op stores sell stamp books
  • Newsagents — Convenience stores and newsagents often stock stamps
  • Amazon — Books of 1st and 2nd class stamps available with Prime delivery

Tips to Save Money

Buy 2nd class for non-urgent post as it saves 50-60% per letter. Buy stamps in books of 12 for convenience. Use large letter sizes where possible instead of parcel rates. For regular posting, consider Royal Mail’s franking or online postage which offers discounts on standard prices.
