How to Pack Fragile Items for Shipping
Parcels get dropped, stacked, and thrown during transit. Here is how to pack fragile items so they survive the journey every time.

The 5-Step Method
- Wrap individually — each fragile item gets its own bubble wrap cocoon
- Cushion the base — 5cm of packing material on the bottom of the box
- Fill all gaps — no movement means no damage
- Double box for high value — box inside a box with cushioning between
- Seal every seam — strong parcel tape on all edges and flaps
Packing Materials You Need
- Bubble wrap — large bubbles for heavy items, small bubbles for lighter items
- Packing peanuts — excellent gap-filler, use biodegradable ones
- Corrugated cardboard — for dividers between items and extra wall strength
- Tissue paper — first layer around delicate surfaces to prevent scratching
- Strong parcel tape — minimum 48mm wide, avoid sellotape and masking tape
By Item Type
Glass and Ceramics
Wrap each piece individually in bubble wrap with at least two layers. Tape the bubble wrap closed. Place upright in the box (not flat). Fill every gap with packing peanuts. Mark FRAGILE and THIS WAY UP on the box.
Artwork and Mirrors
Apply masking tape in an X pattern across the glass surface (this holds shards together if broken). Wrap in cardboard corner protectors. Place between two sheets of rigid cardboard. Wrap the whole thing in bubble wrap.
Bottles and Liquids
Seal the cap with tape. Place in a plastic bag in case of leakage. Wrap in bubble wrap. Stand upright in a box with dividers between bottles. Fill all gaps to prevent movement.
The Drop Test
Before sealing your parcel, do the drop test: hold the box at waist height and drop it on a hard floor. If you hear movement or clinking, add more packing material. Your parcel should be able to survive a 1-metre drop onto concrete without damage — because that is what will happen in a sorting depot.
Insurance Matters
Even with perfect packaging, accidents happen. Always insure fragile items for their full value. Standard courier cover (£20–50) is not enough for most fragile goods. Enhanced insurance through Parcelfire covers up to £5,000 and costs a few pounds extra.
