Pallet Delivery UK: Complete Guide

If your shipment is too heavy or bulky for standard couriers, pallet delivery is the answer. Cheaper than you think, and more reliable too.

When to Use Pallet Delivery

Pallet delivery makes sense when your shipment exceeds standard courier limits — typically over 30kg or over 1.5m in length. It is also better value when you are sending multiple boxes. Strapping 6 boxes to a pallet is cheaper and safer than booking 6 individual courier collections.

  • Items over 30kg that are too heavy for DPD, Evri, or Royal Mail
  • Multiple boxes going to the same address
  • Large or awkward items — furniture, machinery, building materials
  • Fragile items that must stay upright during transit
  • Regular business shipments where consistency matters

How Much Does Pallet Delivery Cost?

Pallet delivery prices depend on pallet size, weight, distance, and whether you need a tail lift. Rough guide for UK mainland delivery:

Pallet SizeEconomy (2-3 days)Next Day
Quarter PalletFrom £45From £65
Half PalletFrom £55From £80
Full PalletFrom £70From £100
OversizedFrom £95From £140

Highlands, Islands, Northern Ireland, and the Channel Islands typically add £20-50 to these prices. Tail lift delivery (needed for residential addresses without a loading bay) adds £15-30.

UK Pallet Carriers

The main pallet networks in the UK are:

  • Palletways — the UK's largest pallet network with 120+ depots. Reliable and widely available. Next day and economy services
  • Pallet-Track — known for excellent tracking and customer service. Competitive pricing for half and full pallets
  • TNT / FedEx Freight — best for international pallet shipments. European and worldwide coverage
  • DHL Freight — strong European network. Good for regular business shipments with account pricing
  • XDP Express — competitive UK pallet service with next-day options

How to Prepare a Pallet

  1. Use a standard wooden pallet — EUR or UK standard (120x100cm). The pallet must be in good condition with no broken slats
  2. Stack boxes evenly — do not overhang the edges. Keep the heaviest items at the bottom. Interlock layers like brickwork for stability
  3. Shrink wrap the entire load — go around at least 3-4 times from bottom to top. Wrap the goods to the pallet, not just around the goods
  4. Strap if necessary — heavy or tall loads benefit from ratchet straps in addition to shrink wrap
  5. Label clearly — place labels on at least two sides of the pallet. Include sender, recipient, and handling instructions

Collection and Delivery

Pallet carriers collect using large vehicles — typically 7.5 tonne or 18 tonne lorries. You need to consider:

  • Access: The lorry needs to get within reach of your loading point. Narrow residential streets can be problematic
  • Loading: Most business collections assume you have a forklift or pump truck. If you do not, request a tail lift vehicle
  • Timing: Collection windows are usually 4-6 hours (e.g., 9am-1pm). You must be available during the full window
  • Residential delivery: Most carriers deliver to kerbside only at residential addresses. They will not carry items inside

Pallet vs Parcel: When to Switch

As a rule of thumb, if you are sending more than 4-5 parcels to the same address, a half pallet is usually cheaper. For single heavy items over 30kg, a quarter pallet is more cost-effective than specialist heavy-item courier services. Use our comparison tool to check both options.
