What is Special Delivery?
Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm is their premium next-day service. It guarantees delivery by 1pm the next working day (or 9am if you pay extra), includes tracking, a signature on delivery, and compensation up to 500 GBP as standard. It is the gold standard for urgent, valuable UK mail.
Pricing
| Weight | By 1pm | By 9am |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 100g | 7.65 GBP | 10.30 GBP |
| Up to 500g | 8.95 GBP | 12.50 GBP |
| Up to 1kg | 10.45 GBP | 15.10 GBP |
| Up to 2kg | 12.85 GBP | 18.90 GBP |
When to Use Special Delivery
Legal documents: Contracts, court papers, visa applications with deadlines. Valuable items: Jewellery, electronics, collectibles worth over 50 GBP. Time-critical items: Event tickets, passports, medical documents. Proof of sending: When you need legal evidence that something was sent and received.
How to Send
Take your item to any Post Office branch before the daily cut-off (usually 3-4pm for next-day guarantee, but check your local branch). You will get a tracking number and receipt immediately. Alternatively, book online with a collection from your address.
Compensation Levels
Standard Special Delivery includes 500 GBP compensation. You can increase this at the counter: 1,000 GBP cover adds approximately 2 GBP, and 2,500 GBP cover adds approximately 4.50 GBP. For items worth more, consider specialist couriers with higher limits.
What Happens If Delivery Fails?
If Royal Mail misses the 1pm (or 9am) guarantee, you are entitled to a full refund of postage. File a claim online within 14 days. If the item is lost or damaged, you can claim up to your compensation level with proof of value.
Special Delivery vs Other Services
Special Delivery is more expensive than DPD or Evri next-day services, but it offers something others do not: a time guarantee backed by compensation. If you just need next-day and do not care about a specific time, DPD via a broker at 5-7 GBP is better value. Use Special Delivery when the guarantee and compensation matter.
