Can You Send a Laptop by Post?
Yes — all major UK couriers accept laptops, but they classify them as fragile electronics. This means you need proper packaging, and most couriers will not cover damage claims if your packaging is inadequate. Laptops contain lithium batteries, which some international services restrict, but domestic UK shipping is straightforward.
Step 1: Back Up Everything
Before sending, back up all data and consider wiping the device if selling. If the laptop is damaged in transit, your data could be lost permanently. Also remove any SD cards or USB devices plugged in.
Step 2: Packaging Materials You Need
You will need: the original box if you have it (ideal), anti-static bubble wrap (at least 2 layers around the laptop), a sturdy double-walled cardboard box at least 5cm larger than the laptop on all sides, packing peanuts or crumpled paper to fill gaps, fragile tape, and a clear address label.
Step 3: How to Pack
Wrap the laptop in anti-static wrap first — regular bubble wrap can create static that damages components. Place it in the centre of your box with at least 5cm of cushioning on every side. The laptop should not move at all when you shake the box. Seal with strong parcel tape, not regular sellotape.
Step 4: Choose Your Courier
| Courier | Price (approx) | Max Cover |
|---|---|---|
| DPD | 8-12 GBP | 5,000 GBP |
| UPS | 9-14 GBP | 25,000 GBP |
| Royal Mail Special | 7-9 GBP | 500 GBP |
| Evri | 4-6 GBP | 100 GBP |
Step 5: Insurance
A decent laptop costs 500 to 2,000 GBP. Do not cheap out on insurance. DPD and UPS offer enhanced cover at checkout. If using a broker like Parcelfire, you can add cover up to the full value. Always declare the correct value — underdeclaring voids your claim.
Top Tips
Never send with the battery at 100% — lithium batteries are safest at 30-50% charge. Photograph your packaging before sealing as evidence for any claim. Use tracked services only — a laptop is too valuable for untracked post. Remove external accessories like dongles, chargers (pack separately), and screen protectors that could shift.
What If It Gets Damaged?
File a claim within 14 days of delivery. You will need your booking reference, photos of the packaging and damage, and proof of value (receipt or listing). Most couriers process claims within 5-10 working days if documentation is complete.
